Pottering Around the Port

Kingsford Quay, which embodies many new features of wharf building, should be available to take its first overseas ship early this month. Harbour Board employees were completing the kerbing and spring fendering of the wharf when the picture Above was taken. Among the new features of its construction are concrete head stocks and pre-stressed concrete deck slabs, both of which have added to the speed of construction.

The other pix on this page are of the 746ft. slipway for ships up to 1200 tons and the winch gear and housing being erected at the slipway. The winches (of 250 h.p.) were part of the equipment of the old Arahura gold dredge. The pic at Bottom Left was taken through the winch house looking towards the slip way.

The huge balance pulleys through which the cable will travel dominate the foreground. The winch house is at Left.
