A Day at the Races
He'd been trying to win the Nelson Trotting Cup for years. He'd had seconds and thirds, but the big win always eluded him. That's why Keith Powell nearly jumped out of his sulky with excitement (Top Left) as his horse Certify romped past the post at the head of the cup field this year. Keith returned to the birdcage to a tumultuous welcome from his fellow West-port enthusiasts and from Nelsonians who have followed the fortunes of this very popular trainer. The two-day meeting was a great success this year - magnificent weather and tremendous racing. A jackpot was operating at Nelson for the first time, but nobody collected.
