New "Mayor" of Stoke

Stoke Jaycees' new twist to the Queen Carnival, the Stoke Mayoralty, was a tremendous success. When the "Mayor", Jack Cameron, received his chain of office from greater Nelson Mayor (Mr Trevor Horne), Above, the five candidates for the Mayoralty had raised among them $1437.65 towards the new pool complex proposed for Stoke, exceeding the target by $437. The deputy-Mayor is another Jack - Jack King, representing Nayland College. Mr Cameron represented Stoke sports clubs. The final placings were announced at the Stoke Spree on New Year's Eve.

Mayoralty candidates awaiting the results of the polls: Brian Daly (Plunket), Jack Cameron (sports), Jack King (Nayland College), Shirley Allan (Stoke businessmen), and Anna Leahy (Nayland Swimming Club). Another contestant, Alex Leckie (Turf Hotel), couldn't get to the swearing-in.
