New Year's Eve was Quieter

The celebrations on New Year's Eve at the Nelson Post Office showed a decided improvement in the behaviour of the crowd compared with recent years, despite some newspaper reports. Better amplification of the music from Station 2ZN set a big section of the crowd dancing; plenty of 44-gallon drums as receptacles for bottles minimised the amount of broken glass on the road and provided a target for those who wished to hear the noise of smashing bottles; the police were firm, but unobtrusive, and the remainder of the penalties inflicted on last year's unruly element all contributed to a much healthier atmosphere at this year's midnight celebrations.
