A Fire Engine for Takaka

Takaka went Steptoe and Son-Happy recently when Takaka Lions organised a giant auction in an effort to raise funds for a new fire engine. And a tremendous success it was, about $3000 being collected. Drawing attention to the auction was a parade of floats, a few of which are depicted here. Top left: A rather perplexed momma, (Joan Richards) and poppa (Jack Bensemann) with their youngest and dearest, Sharon Reilly (some babe!). Above: Some of the Takaka Advancement Club boys and their tractorised engine. Left: The Scouts' version of Steptoe and Son and, below, the Takaka Service Station also came out strongly in favour of scrap. Takaka service organisations intend to raise about $7000 towards the engine.
