On Safari in Nelson

Nelson has always been able to offer the tourist sunshine, peace and beautiful surroundings, but until recently a big percentage of tourists never saw any of the province's best scenic spots because of their isolation. A few months ago, a group of Nelson businessmen, all very tourist-conscious, formed a new company, Skyline Safaris, and now they operate luxurystyle Landrover trips to some unusual tourist spots. The pix on this page were taken during a trip up Fringed Hill. Unfortunately a dense haze below prevented any pictures of merit of the panorama spread out below the hill. Visitors had the opportunity of talking to fire lookout, Norm Gibbs (below) and enjoying a cup of coffee before starting on down.

The company also runs pocket tours to the Flora Hut on Mount Arthur (an all-day trip); over the Maungatapu track, scene of the infamous Maungatapu murders; and shortly, when the track is prepared, the shortest trip of all, up Botanical Hill to the centre of New Zealand, will be undertaken. This Will enable many older visitors and residents who cannot walk to the top to see Nelson from the centre of the Dominion. The company is also planning a hunting and fishing safari early in the new year. Groups of five and six will be taken to the Owen area where they will be accommodated and taken fishing and shooting by guides. We certainly wish the company well on this enterprising venture.
