Sports Under Way

Summer sports are well under way and sportsmen and women are taking advantage of the excellent spell of weather we've experienced in recent weeks. One of the last bowling clubs to open its season was the Coronation Club.

Most members attended opening day (top). The Mayor (Mr Home) declared the season open. With him (above) are the club president. Mrs Marjorie Greig, centre patroness (Mrs Maude Freeman), and the centre president, Mrs Christina Ogier.

Nelson commenced the cricket season on the right note, beating North Canterbury by 158 runs on the first innings. Nelson scored 349 for 5 wickets declared, to North Canterbury's 191. Graeme Lowans and Barry Hampton both scored centuries for Nelson. These pix were taken during the North Canterbury innings. Centre right: P. J. McKay is bowled by Tony Beatson. Right: G. W. Stone hit his wicket when on 67, also a victim of Beatson.
