"The Trade" Honours Auty Harley

All sections of the licensing trade were represented at a testimonial dinner tendered Mr J. A. (Auty) Harley, on his retirement from the brewing industry-a trade to which he gave his active service for 50 years. There are some men in Nelson whose names are as well known as New Zealand's most famous All Blacks, and undoubtedly one of these is Mr Harley. And not only because of his association with Nelson Brewer ies and beer as the brewery's managing director. A big, bluff man, well known for his penchant for calling a spade a spade, Mr Harley has served Nelson and New Zealand in more ways than we can find room here to publish. He's been a former Mayor, has been devoted to patriotic and services' activities, and a soldier of some note. In short-a first-class citizen and one of which Nelson province can be justly proud.

We're rather pleased with this picture at top left of Mr Harley. It is typical Auty Harley. Behind him is the portrait of himself, presented to him by the Nelson Provincial Council of the Licensed Trade. Below: Mr Reg Blake, president of the Council, presented Mr Harley with the deed establishing the Hilda and Auty Harley Trust, which is funded jointly by the Brewers' Association and the Provincial Council. The trust, of $7000, will provide funds for charitable purposes within the province.
