Then and Now

It's difficult to realise that the ship (above) is now the floating landing stage in the small boat harbour of Port Nelson. The ship, of course, is the old Talisman, built in Whangaroa in 1897 as a fore and aft schooner and operated around New Zealand. In 1939 she was converted to an auxiliary oil-burning scow. She had several owners during her sea life (including the Golden Bay Shipping Company and the Pearl Kasper Company) before it came into the hands of the Nelson Harbour Board. Below: As it is today.
