Then and Now

As we draw near to the end of the 1960s, we thought it might interest our readers to know, in two pictures, just what has happened in the heart of Nelson in the last 100 years. The pic above shows Trafalgar Street in the 1860s, with the church on Church Hill dominating the scene.

Today, when a heavy tanker or giant truck goes over a bank or off the road, its recovery can be counted in hours, if not minutes. Back in 1906, this steam engine proved too heavy for the timber decking of the Saltwater Creek Bridge and down she went. When this photo was taken workmen had already spent a week raising the engine to this level.
