Through The Gorge

On the way over to Westport for the Seddon Shield Rugby match we had the opportunity, like many others living in the Nelson and Bays districts, to have a look at the progress on the repairs to the Buller Gorge road, badly smashed up in parts in the Inangahua earthquake last year. There are still one or two sections of the road requiring major reconstruction, but by and large the contractors and Ministry of Works staff have achieved remarkable progress. A sharp quake on the evening of September 5, and some rainfall, brought down the slip shown above at Dublin Terrace, but the road remained open to traffic.

Gold prospectors, using modern equipment (a compressor pump, arrowed right) were hard at it in the Buller River when we went through. Slightly upstream (arrowed, left), two prospectors were panning samples.
