Old College Building Gutted

Fire seriously damaged an old wooden building used as a theatre at Nelson College last month. The temporary-permanent building (erected in 1929 as a temporary measure after the Murchison earthquake) was saved from complete destruction by the prompt arrival of the Nelson Fire Brigade which was given assistance by many of the pupils. Before the brigade arrived pupils attempted to contain the blaze with garden hoses (above). Dense black smoke caused the brigade some problems (left) but there was no shortage of water, the college pool being pressed into service. Below: What appeared to be the seat of the fire is doused with water.
