Maitai Road Improvements

That very bad bottleneck between Nile Street and the old quarry on the Mai tai Valley road is no more. City Council engineering staff recently widened this dangerous section by about 15ft to give an overall road width now of 30ft. A huge section of the hillside was cut and blasted out to affect the widening. This caused some problems, for the hillside there was quite unstable and one big slip had to be cleared (bottom right). Material taken from the area was stockpiled in the quarry (bottom left) and will be used for "rip rap" protection of the sewer pipeline around the seafront on Atawhai Drive.
