Public At Sewer Outfall

The Nelson public, invited by the Mayor and city council to inspect the submarine outfall of the new Nelson sewerage scheme, rolled up in their hundreds earlier this month to view the work accomplished and hear explanations on the methods to be used to launch the submarine pipeline. Each visitor was provided with a three-page account of the project, including two big diagrams, and through this each was able to understand what was being accomplished at each point of the work at the outfall. As well, engineers from the council were on hand to answer questions. The council and staff are to be congratulated on this practical method of showing the ratepayers and residents of Nelson what is being done on this very big city project.

An apt name? It certainly raised a grin or two.

The rubber ring-jointed pipeline, with its nose cone, rests in its assembly trench ready for the launching.

Big crowds attended.

The building and launching of the pipeline requires teamwork, but, unfortunately, on the day of launching one member of the team (the tide) let the side down. The pipeline, buoyed by compressed air, came so close to being launched, but the high tide level was not quite high enough to lift the pipeline to the required level.
