The Rugged Waioeka
The Waioeka Gorge highway, which winds for 36 tortuous miles through a rugged grandeur of near-vertical, bush-clad hillsides and fast-running waters, is featured in these two pictures taken on a recent motor excursion through Gisborne's northern outlet.
A typical scene in the Gorge, with the highway, carved from the side of a hill, climbing above the rock-strewn Waioeka River.
Traffic awaiting the re-opening of a section of the road where workmen have just blasted down a portion of the hillside during reconstruction operations.
