Archery

Since having acquired their new premises in Disraeli Street little over two years ago, the Gisborne Archery Club has grown from strength to strength.

More than 50 enthusiastic archers attend their weekly Wednesday night meetings, among them, world champion, Jim Burton, and several family groups, illustrating that the sport is one for all ages.

The club recently opened its new semi-enclosed shooting gallery which caters for 15 and 30 yard shoots, and has plans for a fully-enclosed one in the not-too-distant future.

Stalwart of the club, Mr Burton, who for many years has been world champion archer, sights up the target before sending another arrow whistling on its way to the bulls-eye.

Newcomers to the game of bows and arrows, which is probably one of the oldest existing sports, sight up on the well illuminated targets from the 15 yards mark.

Jim Burton, who acts as the club's instructor, and is probably better qualified to do so than anyone else in the world, demonstrating to a class of beginners, the art of archery.
