Exit The Whangara Hotel

In a blaze which must have been "a real beaut", the old Whangara Hotel was completely destroyed one evening last month. It was unoccupied, and had been unlicensed since March of last year.

Originally the Pakarae Hotel (see "Photo News" No. 89, page 66), which stood on the old coach road at the mouth of the Pakarae River, the building was moved 42 years ago when the inland road was opened. With another alteration scheduled in the road line, it was not considered worth doing anything further with the hotel, and the licence was allowed to lapse.
