Running In The Rain

On the day of the carnival at Manutuke, every patron received a numbered ticket on arrival. Later in the day, Gisborne harriers ran a relay from Gisborne to Manutuke, bearing the winning number in a sealed envelope. From the Waipaoa bridge on, the harriers had to run through a torrential downpour. Mike Cooper, making the run part of his training for the 26-mile marathon at Waipukurau, scorned baton-changes, and ran the whole distance alone to arrive first at the carnival, bearing a sealed envelope containing the winning number, thoughtfully provided for him.
