Athletics Championships

Owing to adverse weather conditions the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club's championships were postponed from Anniversary Weekend to two floodlit night meetings at the Childers Road Reserve. Subsequently, conditions were not altogether favourable, and times and distances were not outstanding.

One record, however, fell when Max Walker annexed the junior men's discus with a throw of 134 feet 7 inches, and Ian McErlick caused an upset when he threw the javelin within one inch of junior men's centre record.

Other prominent athletes in the championships were Harvey Twigley, Ross Williams, Ron Bell, Kathleen Thomas, Miriam Swarbrick, and Isobel Johnson.
