Hot Hill Climb

Fast and exciting driving was witnessed by the moderate crowd at the Gisborne Car Club's hill climb at Holden's Hill, Longbush, recently. The loose road surface, which caused some spectacular drifting in the earlier portion of the programme, later consolidated and enabled the competitors to clock some very fast times. The efficient organisation of the committee allowed the 21 entrants to have three electrically-timed runs, in which six records were broken, making this one of the most successful hill climbs in the club's history.

Terry Johnstone, in his Satellite Special, recorded the fastest time of the day with 52.3 seconds, but was unable to lower the record he set last year. Gordon Frazer expertly handled his Plymouth to lower his own record by 7/10th second and Murray Jenkinson, in his super-tuned Mini Minor, and John Ward, in his triple-carburetter Zephyr, both reduced their class times considerably.
