The Ministry of Works' latest addition to their road construction machinery is this soil-cement machine, which is to be used for laying road foundations on the East Coast. Similar in operation to a huge rotary hoe, the machine is drawn over cement covered earth, which it churns up and mixes to a depth of about 6ins. A quantity of water is added, and when graded and rolled, the mixture sets hard, forming an ideal road base, the surface of which is then sealed with bitumen.

After finishing a run, the machine is lifted to reveal the revolving teeth which dig and mix the earth.
