First In The World

Because of its proximity to the international date line, and its height above sea level (5753ft), the summit of Mount Hikurangi is the first point of land in the world on which the sun shines each new day. Recently a "Photo News" photographer was one of a party which left Gisborne at first light and flew over the summit to record this notable moment. While in the locality pictures were also taken of the hut being built on the slopes of the mountain by the Gisborne Canoe and Tramping Club.
