A Hut On Hikurangi

Good progress is being made with the erection of a hut on Mount Hikurangi by members of the Gisborne Canoe and Tramping Club. The hut is situated at 3500ft on the 5753ft mountain, the summit of which catches the first rays of the sun each day. Intended as a shelter for climbers, the hut, which will be 20ft by 12ft, should prove a most valuable addition to the back-country amenities in the district. Hikurangi is very often obscured by cloud in the afternoon, and the hut will enable climbers to reach the top in the morning while it is still clear. Much hard work has been put in by Tramping Club members, who had to hoist more than 3000lb of building material from Pakihiroa Station, at 720ft, to the hut site at 3500ft over a distance of several miles. In this they were aided by pack horses.
