The "Open 50" Cycling Race

The 50 mile open road race conducted by the Gisborne Amateur Cycling Club once again proved to be a popular and successful event. Held under good weather conditions, the race attracted riders from Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, with the local riders taking the majority of the prizes. The first four places went to Gisborne's Bruce Ball, Peter Hailey, Ray Brown, and Richard Breingan in that order, but fastest time was gained by Lawrence Cook of Napier closely followed by Neil Robinson.

At night, competitors and supporters were entertained at a dance at which trophies and prizes were presented.
