Canoe Polo

Canoe polo, a sport developed by Mr Bill O'Connell, formerly of Gisborne, founder of the Wairoa Canoe Club, and newly-elected president of the N.Z. Canoeing Association, made its debut in Gisborne last Sunday, when contests were held on the Turanganui River between teams from the Wairoa and Gisborne clubs.

Although the weather was most unpleasant, a good crowd turned out to see the games, in which teams of four canoes each endeavour to score by manoeuvring a ball into goal (a moored tractor tube).

Gisborne won the first game by 11 goals to 3.
