Gisborne By Night

When the Japanese seamen off the Hosha Maru took a look at Gisborne's main street by night, they talked nearly twice as fast as usual. All those strings of coloured lights seemed to be something they hadn't seen before. Certainly Gisborne is a fairyland by (Friday) night. We took a camera up on to the fire escape outside the Albion Hotel in lower Gladstone Road to record the picture.

Looking past the Coronation and Masonic hotels and up Gladstone Road.

A quieter scene met our gaze in the photograph taken looking across the Taruheru River from near the YMCA towards the Peel Street shopping area.

Looking like some illuminated temple of commerce, the new supermarket of Gisborne Sheepfarmers caught our camera's eye up Gladstone Road.

Common Shelton's new store on the corner of Peel Street.and Palmerston Road was a brilliant blaze of light.
