Hungarians Star In Ballet

One of the highlights of the entertainment season in Gisborne was the visit of the New Zealand Ballet Company, with the Hungarian dancers Nora Kovach and Istvan Rabovsky as guest stars.

A husband and wife team, the Hungarians delighted large audiences in the Opera House with ballet of a quality seldom seen in New Zealand, let alone in Gisborne.

For ballet lovers and students of ballet, the visit of the New Zealand company provided opportunities to meet the New Zealand stars, Poul Gnatt and Gloria Young, and to avail themselves of opportunities to benefit from their stay in the city.

The problem of selecting a girl for the Gisborne Ballet Group's scholarship was faced by Poul Gnatt when he judged a number of the group's older members.

The scholarship which sends a girl to the summer ballet school in Wellington at Christmas was won by Miss Diane Clare, a sixteen-year-old fifth form student at St. Mary's Convent and a pupil of Mrs J. Goodwin's ballet class.
