Big Day in Wairoa

Last Saturday was a notable day in the history of Wairoa, and unexpectedly, after three days of stormy weather, the sun shone from a cloudless sky for the historic events of the afternoon, held within view of the flood-swollen Wairoa river.

At 2 p.m., the official opening was held of the old Portland Island lighthouse, which has been re-erected on the river bank near the main bridge as a unique memorial to a service which has guided ships round Mahia Peninsula for 80 years
