The Big Bedstead Race

Some of the fastest bedsteads ever seen in this country came careering down Gladstone Road last Saturday, in the big bedstead race organised by the Jaycees as a preliminary to the Industries Fair. The exciting finish at the Peel Street corner was watched by the largest crowd to gather in the main street since the Royal visit.

About 35 entries were expected, but some failed to survive the pre-race tests, and others came to grief along the 2½ mile course from the Show-grounds.

There was a wide variety of contraptions in the race....three-wheelers, push models, and a luxury double "bedmobile" with bagpipes and crash helmets, propelled by four bicycles. All competitors had to wear night attire.

"Cook Hospital Butchers" won the "foot" section and Wards Transport won the "speed" department.
