The Saints Went Marching Through

An early-season highlight for indoor basketball enthusiasts in Gisborne was the visit last month of the Latter Day Saints team, which has been touring New Zealand and putting up better than 2-to-1 scores against provincial sides. Only once in 20 games had their score been less than 100 points. Last year they beat Poverty Bay by 97 to 9.

But this year it was a different kettle of fish, or basket of balls. A lively Poverty Bay team went into action full of zip and go, and held the visitors to a 66-33 win....a performance only slightly below that of Wellington (defeated 61-35).

It was a lively and exciting game, played at terrific pace, and the spectators, mustered in good numbers, got more than their money's worth. For Poverty Bay, W. Cherry scored 16 points, I. Cowley 4, J. Page 10, R. Taylor 1, and J. Williams 2.
