Mr Bill Bishop, founder of the Gisborne Canoe and Tramping Club, is seen here "cutting the cake" with a machete at the annual dinner of the club held recently at Low's, One of the items on the menu, accompanying the venison and wild pork, was "Nikau Palm" sauce, an echo of a recent trip when, short on rations, Bill and his companions had to eke out with the edible part of the palm.
