Jim McLean, a pupil at Gisborne Boys' High School, receiving the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand's bronze medal from the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, at a function at the High School. Jim received the award for his actions on October 24, 1960, when a boat returning from a fishing trip overturned off Waikanae Beach, and five men were in trouble. He hurried to the scene on his water ski to give aid. All were saved, but without McLean's action at least one, and perhaps two, might have been lost.
