Thousands of seagulls took an intense interest in proceedings at the High School rectory field recently when the turf was scarified and resown. This picture was taken from the Stanley Road side of the field as the tractor moved up the field.

Census night is over, and most folk's papers were collected the next morning. In the country, census-taking means going from door to door too, but the difference is that the doors are miles apart. While accompanying the census-taker on his round, Mr A. Kirk, Cobden Street, took these pictures "way back". They show (top) the Mangatu bridge near Whatatutu, which is being raised to provide more water clearance.

Further down the Waipaoa, at Kaiteratahi, the old railway bridge has now completely disappeared. Well, nearly....a few stumps in the riverbed are all that is left.
