Exit The Mud?

The pictures on this page show one of the subtle but none-the-less important changes in the Gisborne scene.

Over the past year or two, the obvious acres of mud revealed in the Taruheru River when the tide is out have been growing less obvious.

The reason for this desirable change is to be seen in the photographs. Spartena grass ....a species of which thrives on tidal water ....is slowly covering the ugly mud reaches.

The spread of this type of grass is so effective that in due course no mud at all will be seen at low tide.

Looking upstream from Lytton Road bridge: half the mud area is now covered by the grass.

Looking downstream from Roebuck Road bridge: small grass clumps planted by Jaycees from a rowboat have taken root. Watch them grow.
