As anxious workmen lend a steadying hand, the big stainless steel flagpole at the Government Building in Read's Quay is hoisted into position by a mobile crane.

Reputed to have cost in the region of £1000, the flagpole is Gisborne's newest, and most expensive, ornament of its kind.
