Road Safety Week

With "blood-stained" bandages indicating "serious injuries", the rather startling figure seen above was to be observed making painful progress through lunch-hour crowds in Gladstone Road one day last month. No, it wasn't a fugitive from a horror film.....but merely Jim Eddy doing his bit for Road Safety Week in Gisborne by showing what Could happen to careless jay-walkers. This was part of the Jaycee's contribution to road safety, in which prizes were awarded to those who accosted selected jay-walkers each day.

The Transport Department, the Road Safety Committee, and the Motor Trade Retailers combined to put on a display at the Majestic Theatre, and to award a trophy to a "safe driving" motorist. The trophy, a silver tea service, was won by Mrs M. E. Munro, 318 Clifford Street. Picture below shows Mrs Munro arriving at the Majestic to receive her award. From left, the Mayor, Mr Barker; Mr and Mrs Munro; the chairman of the Road Safety Committee, Mr M. T. B. Hall; Mrs Barker; Mrs Worrall; and the manager of the theatre, Mr T. N. Worrall.
