Pictures from the Past

This month's old pictures are an interesting lot for both old and new residents of Gisborne.

The old Peel Street bridge and the Garrison Hall. When the hall burned down, it was the biggest blaze Gisborne has ever seen, before or since. (From J. Devenport).

Photographed in 1925 are two East Coast notables, Mr K. S. Williams (left) and Sir James Carroll.

Another 1925 picture shows two veteran turf enthusiasts at the Gisborne Racing Club's steeplechase meeting of that year. They are Mr John Maynard, founder of the Gisborne Racing Club, and Major Pitt, who was in charge of the Armed Constabulary in 1870. (These two pictures from Mrs W. A. Priestley).
