Bridge Closed to Stock
With the William Pettie bridge in such a bad way that it had to be closed to the passage of stock, Gisborne last month was faced with a thorny problem: how to reconcile its natural desire to be rid of cattle and sheep droving through residential and commercial streets with the needs of primary and secondary industry on which its prosperity is so vitally based.
The City Council took a firm stand that no stock should be allowed to use the Peel Street and Gladstone Road bridges as alternatives to the William Pettie, and suggested that stock should be trucked through the city, preferably by rail.
