Fast and Furious

Sequence Pictures Show E.C. Defence In Action

The pace was on for the annual Poverty Bay-East Coast match when the traditional Queen's Birthday fixture was played at Rugby Park.

After five losses in a row, the Bay came out on top this time by 8 points to 6 in a game which was fast and furious and kept the crowd of 5000 on its toes throughout.

For photographers it was the dullest match ever. By that we mean that the light was the poorest ever recorded at Rugby Park, due to an exceptionally heavy overcast, so that high-speed photography was almost impossible.

But for footballers it was ideal, with no wind and no glare from the sun, and both sides put on a first-class exhibition of the game.

As Collins gets him, Karaka gets ball away to team-mate Hooper.

Hooper knows what to do with what room he's got...

.... Like a ballet dancer poised on one toe he gets in magnificent clearing kick only a yard from his goal line.

Bustling Bay forwards were on top through most of the second spell. These shots close to the goal line show desperate attack and defence in action. Here the Bay forwards are about to pack round Doug Fee (head down with ball).

Coast player picking up ball seems to be heading follow-the-leader chain with Wog Atkins in the middle. Collie Henderson will intercept that pass if he can.
