New College Opened

A landmark in the life of the Roman Catholic community of Gisborne came last month with the opening of the new Edmund Campion College.

The handsome new home of Catholic education in the district, for which Glengarry, Glengarry and Corson were architects, and Story and Lomas were the principal builders, stands on a magnificent site at the corner of Gladstone Road and Nelson Road, opposite the Park Golf Links.

The college is named for the English Catholic martyr of the 16th century.

Pictures shown here were taken on the sunny morning of May 25, when 150 boys won the honour of being first-day pupils.

The unusual design of the college's classroom block has drawn much favourable comment. Beneath the elevated classrooms are housed locker rooms, conveniences, and adequate space for shelter from the elements.
