In this picture, taken a few minutes before the drill began to revolve at Mangaone No. 1 well on May 5, two of the crew on the rig are guiding the bit into the all-important "hole in the ground".

In the 100-year search for Oil in Gisborne district, some 34 holes have been bored or dug looking for the elusive "black gold", all in vain.

This will be the deepest of them all, penetrating over two miles into the ground.
