Canoe Slalom

Pictures on these pages were taken at the first of the N.Z. Canoe Championship events held at Gisborne during Easter.

This was the senior slalom race, run in the Matawhero Cut on the Waipaoa River in conditions of exceptional difficulty.

The fast-running river in the cut, still swollen by flood waters, provided entrants with an exacting test of skill and strength, and many were unable to cope with the difficulties.

In fast-flowing river, Richard Mann (Gisborne) has capsized and canoeists on bank hurry to his aid.

Alec Carr (Wellington), last year's winner, was 8th this time, here fights swift current

On second run, Mann did well, finished in sixth place

Bill O'Connell, Wairoa and Gisborne, won second place

Gisborne's Irwin Openshaw finished in third place
