"Endeavour" Makes its First Rescue

Picture below conveys some of the thrills of a yacht race in Poverty Bay, When the wind is freshening, the spray is flying, and the boats are straining over as their crews "trapeze" them into the breeze on a reach.

A miscalculation at a time like this, or the sudden action required to avert a collision in an emergency, can find a boat mast-down in the water.

For just such occasions the Yacht Club has equipped itself with a "pick-up" launch, the "Endeavour", and "Photo News" was aboard the other Saturday when "Endeavour" brought in its first casualty, towing it close alongside from far out in the bay to the security of the harbour.

Club Commodore Bob Castles pilots pick-up. With him are club officials Mrs Stevenson and Allan Haynes. Yacht is in tow at left, with crew members John Howe and David Hemsley.
