Sinterklaas in Gisborne
Holland's Santa Claus, St. Nikolaus, received a warm welcome from Dutch children in Gisborne when he paid them a visit on his birthday and traditional day of gift-giving, December 6.
Known to Dutch children as Sinterklaas, the fine old gentleman arrived at the Te-Hapara Church Hall accompanied by his assistant, Black Peters, carrying a bag of lollies in one hand, for good children and a switch in the other, for naughty children.
Inside the hall, Sinterklaas, assisted by his black offsider, and with the help of a large reference book, proceeded to hand out gifts...
... with the assembled Dutch community looking on.
