Gladstone Road Bridge Repairs

Work is now in progress on the long job, expected to take most of this year, of repairing the city's most vital bridge, the Gladstone Road bridge over the Turanganui River.

Bridges expand and contract with the weather, and this constant movement, though small, has resulted in serious damage underneath the Gladstone Road bridge, where abutments and pier tops have been fractured to the point where spans were in danger of collapsing into the river.

When repairs have been made, the bridge should be as good as new.

Meantime, wooden ramps carry traffic over excavations in the bridge deck.

Minor traffic jams occur in rush hours as long lines of cars negotiate ramps. Inconvenience should disappear as motorists get used to new conditions.
