Red Cross Conference

A singular honour was conferred on Gisborne when the New Zealand Red Cross Society held its annual conference here on the occasion of its centennial year.

The conference was held in the new War Memorial hall, and was opened by the Prime Minister, Mr Nash, who travelled up from Wellington by plane especially for the occasion.

On the final evening of the conference, which was combined with the Cook Hospital graduation ceremony, opportunity was taken to present to Miss F. J. Cameron, O.B.E., Director-General of Nursing Services, one of the highest awards in the nursing profession, the Florence Nightingale medal. The presentation was made by Sir Alexander Gillies.

The local Red Cross committee was assisted in the entertainment of delegates by a number of Gisborne organisations.

The pictures were taken at a social evening arranged for the entertainment of delegates by members of the Victoria League. A very pleasant and sociable evening was enjoyed by all present.
