Boxing at the Opera House

The Tongan, Alani Kaihau, came off second-best at the Opera House last month in his professional welter-weight fight with the promising young Australian, Tommy Collins. In the early rounds, Kaihau often took the initiative and had Collins on defence, but the Australian's superior ringcraft wore down the stocky little islander as the fight progressed. The eighth round saw the end of the fight when Kaihau, his ear bleeding profusely, appealed to his own corner, and indicated to the referee (Mr Harry Swann) that he wished to withdraw, whereupon Collins was declared the winner on a TKO. (These two pictures by Eastland Photographers).

Representatives of local gymnasiums provided the amateur contests. (see next page).
