Courthouse Destroyed By Fire

In the most newsworthy fire for many a year, Gisborne's Courthouse, in Read's Quay, was gutted by fire on Saturday night. The fine, old-style building, constructed in Kauri, was well ablaze when the alarm sounded. The Gisborne and Manutuke brigades fought the fire for four hours. Because of the intricate construction of the building, the firemen's work was made extremely difficult.

Almost the whole of the north-east corner of the building was gutted, and the courtroom ceiling and roof lay collapsed over the Bench.

The fire seldom broke through in spectacular flames, but was notable instead for the large volumes of acrid smoke which poured out of the building.

As this issue of "Photo News" went to press, police were investigating the cause of the fire, which broke out at the same time as one at the rear of Christies, the furnishers.

The new filtration plant for the Macrae Baths arrived some months ago, and installation is now almost completed. The plant will ensure that the water in the baths is kept pure at all times. When these pictures were taken a working bee was busy "bucket brigading" sand into the filtration house, where other volunteers were filling the big cylinders or tanks. Sand and grades of shingle act as filters, for the water, which is pumped through the tanks.
