Four generations of the McCracken family, from left, are John and Charles McCracken, Ranfurly Road, Gisborne; Chas. H. McCracken, Te Puia Springs; and Walter McCracken, Hansen Rd., Gisborne, snapped on the occasion of grandfather's 89th birthday. Charlie McCracken is well-known identity on the East Coast. where he is a pioneer road and bridge contractor. He took the first dray and horses from Gisborne to Pakihiroa, built many of the coast bridges, formed much of the coast road, and built the wharves at Port Awanui and Hicks Bay, and the original Tokomaru Bay wharf.
