Hydatids can be a deadly killer, and is always a menace when dogs are about —but these children, Peter and Phillip Andrew, are almost certainly safe because their dog Bruce has been dosed to clear him of hydatid worms. Many other Gisborne children are not so fortunate.
Gisborne Jaycees have now embarked on an ambitious project to dose every dog in Gisborne. In addition, Gisborne veterinarians, using facilities at the Veterinary Club, will test every dog free to prove whether or not it was a carrier of hydatid infection.
The Jaycees' aim is to make Gisborne the first hydatid-free city in New Zealand.
